Ingredients

  • 1 cup (250 ml) chopped dates
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups (375 ml) boiling water
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup (250 ml) sugar
  • 2 cups (500 ml) flour
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 ml) Epicure's Sea Salt
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 ml) baking soda
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) Epicure's Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Tbsp (15 ml) Epicure's Pure Cocoa
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) Epicure's Milk Belgian Chocolate
  • Topping:
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) sugar
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) Epicure's Milk Belgian Chocolate

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 325° F (170° C).
2. Cover dates with baking soda and water. Let stand until cool.
3. Cream together shortening, eggs and sugar. Combine both mixtures and beat well.
4. Add flour, baking soda, Vanilla Extract, Pure Cocoa and Milk Belgian Chocolate. Pour into a parchment-lined 9” x 13” (23 x 33 cm) pan.
5. Mix topping ingredients and spread over cake batter. Bake at 325° F (170° C) for 40 minutes.
